Editorial: Week 30 of The New York State Legislature

Earlier this month, the individuals you elected to represent you in the state Legislature packed up and left chambers, another session supposedly complete. However, when they adjourned, lawmakers left a disaster in their wake. Incredibly, the state is still limping along without a finalized budget for the 2010-11 fiscal year, which began April 1 – nearly four months ago. Last week, Gov. David Paterson did what any sane leader would, calling for legislators to return this Wednesday evening for a special session to complete their undone work. Audacious as ever, even less than four months before voters will decide their fates at the polls, lawmakers are putting up a fight, arguing Paterson technically isn’t in a position to call them back that they are still technically in an “extraordinary session” that began months ago. New Yorkers are not taking lawmakers’ neglect quietly. Democrat and Chronicle readers have sent more than 7,500 “Fed up with Albany” coupons to the Editorial Page, joining adding their voices to a growing chorus of citizen discontent with state leaders. Other Albany reform initiatives have also been popping up around the state, including New York Uprising, led by former New York City Mayor Ed Koch. Last Thursday, New York Uprising, led by former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, released an “enemies of reform” list.

“Citizens, New Yorkers must take advantage of this special time in our state’s history and demand Reform. Join us, this is our year.”
